Fig. 1 shows how horizontal spatial relations organise a functional region (concept of situation). Basic nature of a functional region expressed by the principles of internal cohesiveness and external seperation, the concept of self-containment of a region is shown in fig. 2. A simple classification of functional regions based on the character of region-organising interactions is given in fig. 5 and fig. 3. Special instances of functional regions are given in fig. 4.
