Administrative regions: spatial interaction modelling approach

Topographic version of the Reilly´s model has been employed to propose administrative divisions of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In case of the Czech Republic smaller administrative units (“areas with extended authority”) have been used as basic spatial units and these have been assigned to 13 existing regional capitals at the NUTS 3 level (fig. 1). A comparison to existing administrative division is provided as well.

In case of Slovakia the functional urban regions (Bezák 2000) have been employed as basic spatial units. Fig. 2 shows the situation with 6 regional capitals, fig. 3 with 13, then. Fig. 3 also shows the proposal of NUTS 3 and 2 regions in Slovakia.

In both cases the β parameter of the model has been set to 5, which is the value that had appeared to provide the optimal results for administrative division.
